You’re not hired. I can’t pay you. If it turns out there’s something to it, I’ll make sure you get put on the case. That’s all I can do.

The Art Assignment #4

Never Seen, Never Will - my own body

My wrists are probably my favorite part of my body, and I spend a lot of time staring at them. I’m constantly intrigued by how translucent my skin is, the asymmetry and colors of my veins, and the tendons flexing as they move.

It was while examining my wrists that I realized I’m never going to be able to see the inside of my own body. I can see parts of my body when they have been removed - my blood in the pint bag when I’m donating it, or my wisdom teeth after they’ve been pulled - but I’m never going to be able to see the parts of my anatomy while they’re still in the context of my own body. I can’t see my blood while it’s actually pumping through my veins, and I can’t see the muscles and bones under my skin, and I can’t see my heart or my brain or my kidneys, though I know that all of these things exist and function. I’m only capable of seeing internal parts of my body once they’re detached from the context of actually being within it.

It’s strange to think that though everything in my body belongs entirely to me, and I can feel my lungs breathing and my heart beating, I can never see them doing these things. I could cut myself and see the blood, but already that blood would be disengaged from being part of the whole.

It’s fascinating that I will carry this body with me my whole life but never be able to view the internal anatomy of it. I’m struck by how completely personal my body is, how it contains everything that I am, and yet how closed off it is to me.

The skin that protects me from external elements and dangers also protects me from my own prying eyes.

ransom and i got married several months ago in an intimate ceremony, but recently had a larger reception for more family and friends, and it was a blast! as we’re both writers, it seemed fitting to have the event at one of our favorite bookstores: the last bookstore in downtown LA. we’ve had a lot of requests for photos, so i thought i’d drop a few here. hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

:::for the especially curious:::

my bouquet: was made from the pages of ransom’s novel (miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children).

our photographers: brandon + katrina of brandon wong photography.

venue: the last bookstore in downtown los angeles.

catering: the extremely fabulous heirloomla.

flowers: from floral art!

rentals: furniture from found rentals, dishes from dishwish!

the band: one of our favorite local indie bands, the gallery.

hugs and books!

xx
